Your final average (or year average) is an important grade. It determines whether you pass, which direction you can choose, and which attestation you receive. Here we explain how to calculate it.
The final average can be calculated in different ways:
- All grades from the entire school year (trimesters/semesters)
- Only exam grades (final exams)
- A combination: period grades + exams with different weights
Most Belgian schools use one of these methods:
Each subject gets a weighted average of all tests, assignments, and exams. The final grades per subject are then averaged (whether or not weighted by study load).
Each period (trimester) has an average. The final average is the average of the periods, where the last trimester sometimes weighs more heavily.
Note: Each school may use its own system. Check your school's regulations or ask your teacher.
You can find your final grades on your report and in Smartschool:
- Smartschool shows your preliminary averages per subject
- The official final report only comes at the end of the school year
- In case of doubt, the class council decides on your final result
In Belgium, you receive an attestation at the end of the year:
- A-attestation: You passed and can continue to the next year in the same track
- B-attestation: You passed but with restrictions - you must change direction
- C-attestation: You did not pass and must repeat the year
