Calculate weighted average

How to calculate the weighted average of grades?

To calculate the weighted average of grades, you need the values of individual grades and their corresponding weights. At school, this is the weight of your tests. At university, these are your study credits (ECTS). Use our calculator or follow these steps:

  1. 1. Make sure you have the values and corresponding weights for each grade.
  2. 2. Multiply each grade by its weight.
  3. 3. Add up all the products.
  4. 4. Add up all the weights.
  5. 5. Divide the sum of products by the sum of weights.

The formula for weighted average of grades

Weighted average = (grade1 × weight1 + grade2 × weight2 + ... + gradeN × weightN) / (weight1 + weight2 + ... + weightN). Where grade1, grade2 ... gradeN are the individual grades, weight1, weight2 ... weightN are the corresponding weights, and N is the number of grades and weights.

Calculate arithmetic average

How to calculate the arithmetic average?

To calculate the arithmetic average, add up all values and divide by the number of values. Follow these steps:

  1. 1. Add up all grade values.
  2. 2. Count the number of grades.
  3. 3. Divide the sum of values by the number of grades.

The formula for arithmetic average

Grade average = (grade1 + grade2 + grade3 + ... + gradeN) / N. Where grade1, grade2, grade3 ... gradeN are the individual grades and N is the number of grades.

Scientific perspective

What does Wikipedia say about weighted average?

The weighted average generalizes the arithmetic average and provides a characterization of a statistical dataset when the values in the dataset have different importance or weights. It is mainly used when calculating the overall arithmetic average of a dataset consisting of multiple subsets.
