Improve Grades - Tips and Strategies for Belgian Students

Practical tips to improve your grades and raise your average.

Bad grades? Don't panic! With the right approach, you can improve your results. In this article, we share proven strategies that work for Belgian school and university students.

  • Review all your grades in Smartschool or your school's platform
  • Calculate your current average (use our calculator!)
  • Identify your weakest subjects
  • Check the weights of tests, assignments, and exams
  • How much time do you have until the final evaluation?

Tip: A failing grade of 8/20 is easier to compensate than a 4/20!

Ask your teacher for help. This shows motivation and can open doors:

  • Which topics should I practice more?
  • Are there retake opportunities or extra assignments?
  • Can I ask questions after class?

Schedule a meeting with your teacher or ask for help through CLB.

Note: This only works if you actually put in effort. Teachers notice the difference!

In many schools, you get a retake exam for subjects with a failing grade. Prepare seriously for this - it's often your last chance!

For some subjects, you may get an oral exam. This is your chance to show that you understand the material.

Assignments often count toward your final grade. Always submit them on time and do them carefully.

Ask if you can do extra exercises or a bonus assignment.

For some subjects, class participation counts. Ask questions, participate in discussions.

Focus on what has the most impact:

  • Subjects with the highest weight (more ECTS or study credits)
  • Subjects where you're just below 10/20
  • Subjects with upcoming tests
  • Subjects where improvement is easiest

Avoid: Tackling too many subjects at once or only focusing on subjects you like.

Most Belgian schools use Smartschool. Use it wisely:

  • Regularly check your grades and notifications
  • Review the weights of tests and assignments
  • Keep track of assignment deadlines
